Fragile items are often a tricky point of each relocation. Even if movers want to handle them, there’s always the risk of damaging some of these items and losing a lot of money and valuable memories. That’s why it is best to pack and move fragile items by yourself. However, that’s not always easy. You need to learn how to do it properly and that’s why here are the main tips on how to pack and move fragile items without worrying about their safety during transport.
Don’t pack and move fragile items in a hurry
Since these are sensitive items, be sure to dedicate some time to pack them. Be careful with your breakables if you are packing in a hurry since packing them quickly usually leads to damaging them by accident.
Gather all the necessary supplies
For packing the items that break easily, you will need special, high-quality packing supplies. Here’s what you will need:
- moving boxes – be sure to find sturdy, high-quality moving boxes. Also, think about the size. Maybe you don’t need boxes that are too big, because it’s not too safe to have a huge, heavy box with fragile items inside. Packing them in smaller groups is much safer.
- packing paper
- bubble packaging
- soft cardboard for protection
Prepare a special place for packing
Dealing with fragile items require a special place to do it properly. Prepare a large table so you can safely lay out all the items and pack them with ease.
Mix heavy and light items
Don’t over pack the boxes and make them too heavy to carry. Instead, mix heavy and light items. Just be sure to put heavy items at the bottom, and lighter at the top of a box.
Pack odd-shaped items alone
If you have some items that have uneven shape, place them alone in a box. The safest way to protect them is to put a blanket on the bottom, and then put the item in the box. Furthermore, you can place a pillow, or several small pillows on top of the item, so it’s protected from jiggling.
How to pack and move fragile items that are the most common
Plates and similar kitchen items are quite delicate. So, especially if you have expensive china, be sure to pack it properly. First of all, choose medium sized boxes. Then, put a piece of packing paper (crumple it beforehand) at the bottom of the box and place the plates vertically. Be sure to wrap each plate separately and don’t put too many plates in the box.
Apart from wrapping each glass separately be sure to put the crumpled paper between them, as well as between the box wall and glasses.
