Nowadays, many people are moving to California from NYC, and there’s nothing strange about that. However, there’s something strange about how New Yorkers take on life in California. Don’t get us wrong, most of them are doing fine, but some things all of them have in common. And those are the things that they miss the most about NYC. It’s simple when you think about it. New York can’t be any more different than any city in Golden State. Probably that’s why people are having nostalgic moments about the Big Apple although they enjoy their new lives. Some things you simply can’t get here. We’ve talked to many New Yorkers who live on the Gold Coast and this is what they said they miss the most.
The subway
Believe it or not, the most hated thing in the city is one that you’ll miss the most. We, the people, are usually unaware of how lucky we are to have something until we lose it. That’s pretty much how things are with the subway. Although complaining about MTA is the most common small talk in the Big Apple, New Yorkers seem to struggle without it.
Yes, it is not perfect. But, there aren’t many 24-hour subway systems in the world. And even when you’re waiting what seems an eternity for a train at the end of the night, at least you know that it will come. And that’s something you won’t get after moving to California for work. Also, if you think about it the routes are fairly easy to get your head around so inconveniences are minimal. Unfortunately, we become aware of this only when we have to get in the car and drive ourselves everywhere. For some of us driving may be fun, but there’s nothing wrong with getting everywhere by train for much less money.

Subway is one of the things that you will really miss after moving to California from NYC.
You will miss the food after moving to California from NYC
Anyone who visited New York, let alone lived there, will tell you – the food is amazing. It is known as the place with the best pizza and bagels in the whole of the U.S. No one knows what’s their secret, but whatever it is, it works. Another thing is the variety of food you can find at any time of the day or night. After moving to California from NYC you become aware of how good the food scene really is in the Big Apple.
In California however, bagels are not that great. And although you certainly aren’t leaving NY and starting over elsewhere for no reason, don’t underestimate your love for the bagels. They’re special things and you will definitely miss them.
Food delivery
Now, this is something that may vary depending on where in California you move. Since the state has some of the best universities in the country, on campuses deliveries are amazing. However, all the chances are that you won’t get the service even remotely close to one that you get in New York. That’s because NYC is pretty much the only city in the world in which you can order sushi at 11 P.M., and have it on your table at 11:20 P.M. That simply doesn’t happen anywhere else.
Walking
It may seem strange, but many New Yorkers are complaining that they miss the pace that they had in the old city. It’s not just that the city never sleeps, it seems like people living in it never sleep. The pace simply never slows down. So even if you don’t have time to train, you know you got your dose of practice with running around all day. You don’t realize how much you are used to all of that until you leave NYC.
In California, you’ll drive everywhere simply because it’s pretty much the only way of travel. Not many cities are walkable and life won’t wait for you. So walking is another thing that you might miss after moving to California from NYC.

People do rush everywhere in New York, and after some time you may get nostalgic about it.
Cabs
Another thing that we’re not aware of is how easy is to find a ride home. You can find yellow cabs all over Manhattan, and even in other neighborhoods there’s plenty of options o choose from. On the other hand, in California, it’s a different story. Although there are taxis and Ubers around, scoring one is not that easy. And it can get extremely difficult on a busy Saturday night. So, you have to find a designated driver when you’re going out, or your returning home will be an adventure on its own.
The views are another thing that you’ll miss after moving to California from NYC
Now, this is something that was mentioned to us not only by the New Yorkers but by professionals from heartmoving.us too. No city in California looks as amazing as New York. Now, this may be subjective, but it’s almost impossible not to love some of the stunning views that NYC has to offer. Whether it’s from the top of the high building when you can see the whole town, or from the street level. And of course, every real New Yorker knows that the best view of the city is of the skyline itself.

New York is a beautiful city, even looking from the ground up.
Tourist spots
It’s strange we know, but somehow we manage to get emotional even about nonsense like these are. Every New Yorker deep down has a soft spot for some of the tourist attractions around the city. Will that be Staten Island Ferry, or John Lennon memorial in Central Park it doesn’t matter. What matters is that we love these little places around town and they mean something to us because of various reasons. And that’s why we miss them even when we’re definitive on about should we live in California or New York.
The people
If you are a people watcher you’ll have an amazing time in the Big Apple. The thing is that residents of this city are a unique and fantastic mashup of anything you can think of. If nothing else, the sheer energy that you can get from all of them. A sense of urgency can almost be felt in the air and that’s something that no other city has. Just a crowd that’s amazing to be part of. Another thing that will be missed after moving to California from NYC.
